The Life of James and Jess

Runswick Bay

We hired a car and headed up to Runswick Bay for the weekend, making sure to pack plenty of warm clothes for what we knew would be a cold weekend. Remembering how icy the tops of the North York Moors had been previously, we decided to drive up via Roseberry Topping instead. We’d forgotten just how beautiful it was around there and immediately said we’d have to come back for a proper walk sometime.

The weekend had been planned by James's mum, Jill, and she'd picked a great spot. After arriving and getting settled into the Airbnb, the afternoon split a little. James and Edward were both working, while Jess, Jill and Eleanor wandered down to the front and popped into the pub for a catch up and ended up having one of those great conversations about life. It was the perfect slow start to the weekend.

We’d packed plenty of food and snacks to see us through the weekend and spent the evening cosied up by the log burner and watched The Traitors.

The next day was Jill’s birthday, and we wrapped up warm to walk a coastal section of the Cleveland Way from Runswick Bay to Staithes. The ground was frozen in places, and along the way a few friendly walkers reminded us to take care. The views along the coast were absolutely stunning – with the winter light and the fresh sea air, it felt like a really special way to spend the day and we had such a lovely time together.

Most of the walk was fine although the final descent into Staithes was a bit of a death trap! Once we made it down in one piece, we rewarded ourselves with a drink in the pub and then caught the bus from the top of the hill back to the Airbnb.

We spent the rest of the weekend taking things easy, chatting, laughing, and playing a few games like Mapominoes and Don’t Get Got. It all felt very wholesome, and a lovely way to start the year!
